Guys…this is one of those months that I’m really sad to see go. If you haven’t been able to tell from my Instagram feed, I’ve been having a ton of fun playing with my hair all month and it’s gonna be a major bummer not to have an excuse to give myself a fancy hairstyle every day.
So, that’s a wrap. I still have plenty of styles dogeared in the book though so you’ll probably see a hair-inspired selfie pop up here and there. Until then, I’m off to my next challenge—more on that later though.
Before I officially send this challenge on its way, I have a fun surprise for you guys…a giveaway! The first 3 people to comment on this post will get their very own copy of Braids, Buns, and Twists! courtesy of the kind folks at Chronicle Books.
This one turned out pretty cool, but I had a hard time feeling psyched about it because I failed at 2 different hairstyles before giving up and trying it as a last resort. 1 outta 3 ain’t bad though, right?
The styles I couldn’t manage to pull off were the Crowning Braid (my hair is too effing long and pinning it up just looked like crap) and the Gibson Roll—which I really just can’t figure out for the life of me. Grrr…
Is anyone out there a master of the Gibson Roll? I’m in need of some pro-tips because I’m determined to check it off the list before my Braids, Buns and Twists challenge is over. Anyone, anyone?
Pay no attention to that bobby pin sticking out from the middle…
Although this one doesn’t actually take that long to do, it does take a minute or two to get the hang of it—or at least it did for me. I love how it looks though, and it was practical (and pretty) for yoga today as well.
I’m giving the Angel Braid points for fashion and function, and also one for repeatability—and if that wasn’t a word before it is now.
Ok, ok, so I didn’t use a real sock, I used one of these “bun makers” instead—but I like saying “sock bun” more than “donut bun” so for these purposes, that’s what we’re calling it. Pretty cool though, right? It was really simple to do, plus it was perfect for yoga practice this morning so it’s a double win in the Book of Danne (which means it gets a point for fashion and a point for function). Score!
Tomorrow = Braids
p.s. You know you’re in your 30’s when…you take multiple #sockbunselfies and choose the one which minimizes the visibility of your wrinkles the most. True story…
If you’ve seen me in person lately you’ve probably noticed that I’m rocking about 500 feet of long, blonde hair—like the true boho yogini that I am at heart. I’ve been growing it out since I cut it short a few years back and keep telling my hair stylist to let me know when it crosses the line from “sun kissed yoga chick” to “Amish escapee”, which she assures me I haven’t reached yet, phew…
With all this hair I have to work with you’d think I’d be a styling pro, but I pretty much just blow it out straight or throw it in a bun. Talk about a wasted opportunity…it’s time this girl learned to “do hair”.
When I was telling a co-worker about an awesome book called, Braids, Buns, and Twists! that I had seen at the Paper Source, she suggested that I make a lent out of it, which I instantly jumped on board with (especially because it gave me an excuse to buy the book, win!).
So, this month I’m choosing 20 (or so) styles from the book and trying my hand at styling my mane. Get ready for some pretty hair pics (and probably a few epic fails). The timing is perfect too because I’m away in Kalamazoo all week for the second tier of my yoga teacher training, which is pretty much the perfect place to be for hair-braiding month, right?
I’ll leave you with a recent win I had: The Pretzel Braid. Not bad, right?
